Books if you’re excited to see WICKED!

Hi Reader,

I so enjoy a witch-themed book. And stories about witches. And movies about witches!

So, get ready for a “Wicked” newsletter that includes:

(*Note: I put all the links in Wicked green!)

What's so magical about a witchy tale?

Maybe it’s because witches have all that feminine power. Their stories have drama. Misunderstood characters. And magic!

Look into a crystal ball and know things. Wave a wand and make it so. Cast a spell and have your way!

Of course, for all that power, the story often takes a turn for the worse. I won’t mention “melting” here to safeguard from raising the ire of a certain wicked one!

Speaking of a wicked one … Witches don’t get more iconic than the Wicked Witch of the West!

Wicked, the Movie, is Coming Soon!

In the new movie, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, we’ll get to see the story of Elphaba and Glinda, the two witches of Oz, come to life in a whole new way.

I’m so excited to see it. It looks so goooood! I love how this story flips the script on everything you always thought about the Wicked Witch of the West from the original Wizard of Oz film.

The movie will officially be released in theaters on November 22nd. However, Prime members can attend an exclusive early screening of Wicked on Monday, November 18th at 7 pm.

If you’re a Prime Member, read how to get tickets here. And if you’re not a Prime Member but suddenly feel like it’s a “wicked” good idea, click here to sign up for Prime!

Read the Original Wicked

It’s always fun to read the book that inspired the movie. That’s the only way to really know the depths of the characters, and all the backstories movies often can’t fit.

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire

This thrilling, twisted origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West takes us back to Oz in a way you’ve never seen before. This book reimagines the land of Oz with a darker, more complex perspective, revealing the misunderstood life of Elphaba, the so-called “Wicked” Witch.

My Thoughts: I love how this take on the Wicked Witch of the West makes you question who’s truly “good” or “bad” and shows how life isn’t always as black and white as it seems. You’ll likely be enchanted from start to finish. Buy a Collector’s Edition on Amazon!

The Wicked Series Box Set by Gregory Maguire

The Wicked Years (Series Box Set) by Gregory Maguire is a collection of four books that’ll put you right into the magical yet twisted world of Oz and Gregory Maguire’s “Wicked” interpretation of L. Frank Baum’s original story of Dorothy.

My Thoughts: It’s the perfect gift idea for anyone who’s a fan! Each book takes you deeper into this rich, complex world full of unexpected characters and moral dilemmas. Buy it on Amazon!

Best Books About Witches (That are Wickedly Spellbinding!)

If you love all things “witches,” you’re in for a wicked good time. I’ve boiled, toiled, and troubled to summon up a witchy booklist to keep you spellbound!

Here's a new release from the list:

The Stone Witch of Florence by Anna Rasche

In Florence, Italy, during the midst of the Black Death, Ginevra di Gasparo is known as the Stone Witch. When fears of her ability to harness the power of gemstones for healing bubble over, she is forever exiled from the city.

However, after a decade, officials request Ginevra to return to help them solve the mystery of recently stolen relics. The stakes are high for the people of Florence and the Stone Witch’s future, especially with sinister forces at play.

My Thoughts: Add this book to my “want to read” list, even if it’s not October! I love the mystery and the setting. The reviews are enthusiastically positive, with readers sharing how it’s addictively page-turning! Buy it on Amazon!

Thanks for reading today’s newsletter! I hope I put a reading spell on you!

Until next time,

Happy Reading!

P.S. - Here’s one more book recommendation from a friend’s Goodreads list (that I stalked!): Salt & Broom by Sharon Lynn Fisher. It has glowing reviews and I love how the story is inspired by Jane Eyre. Plus, the raven on the cover is so awesome. It’s giving all the witchy vibes!

Short books you can read in a day

Hi Reader, It’s so warm here in my corner of the Southeastern PA that I can hardly believe I’ve flipped the calendar to November! This morning, I warned my teens that with Halloween out of the way, there’s nothing to get in the way of the full onslaught of everything “holidays.” They reminded me that it’s already begun, and I’ve just been in denial. True! I have a love/hate thing going on with the holiday season. Most of the next two months seem way too overwhelming. But if I pick out the...
